Bob Schimmel, a comedian recognized for his work on Late Night with Conan Obrien, HBO and Howard Stern’s radio show, was hospitalized in Arizona after he was injured in a car accident on August 26.

The accident occurred when his daughter, Aliyah, 19, swerved to avoid another accident and the car she was driving flipped repeatedly. Father and daughter were both seriously injured, but word is Aliyah is now in stable condition, as is Schimmel’s 11-year-old son, who was also in the car.

Robert “Bob” Schimmel eventually succumbed to his injuries as his death was confirmed on Facebook by his brother, Jeff Schimmel.

“Robert Schimmel. Son, Brother, Father, Grandfather, Comedian, Generous Man. I have always loved you, admired you, and was proud to be your biggest fan. I will never forget a single moment. RIP,” Jeff Schimmel posted.

Schimmel’s death was as much caused by the accident as his need for a liver transplant. Earlier this year, the comedian revealed he was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver due to an air force blood transfusion tainted with hepatitis C. Sadly, Schimmel’s ailing liver kept him from properly healing.

With Schimmel’s racy, raw and irreverent comedy style, few topics were off limits. While some may have classified his humor as offensive, it clearly appealed to many. He was also heralded as having the sharp tongue of a survivor.

Back in 2000, after Schimmel had already survived that bad blood transfusion, a heart attack and losing his 11-year-old son to cancer, he was diagnosed with Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. This news came just as he’d finally landed his own sitcom and forced him to bow out of the project.

After winning his cancer battle, he resumed his career with the memoir, Cancer on Five Dollars a Day* (*chemo not included): How Humor Got Me Through the Toughest Journey of My Life. He got back into the comedy game, but after surviving two messy divorces and a relapse, he moved to Arizona to care for his parents and await a liver transplant.

Schimmel memorials

Schimmel is survived by five children, as well as tons of fans in and around the comedy community. His funeral is scheduled for 1 pm on Wednesday at Paradise Memorial in Scottsdale, Arizona, with a tribute to be scheduled in Los Angeles.

Howard Stern is dedicating his show tonight, September 7, to Schimmel’s memory. The special will air on Howard 101 at 7 pm.

Schimmel has also received twitter love from his colleagues. “Robert Schimmel was one of the first people in comedy to call when my folks were fighting cancer. No ego no bs no small talk just inspiration,” tweeted Dane Cook.

“I’m so sad about Robert Schimmel dying. I’ve been checking the news for 3 hours hoping it wasn’t true. He was very funny and wonderful,” tweeted Penn Jillette.

“Robert Schimmel was one of the funniest and nicest guys in comedy,” tweeted Jimmy Kimmel.

“(Expletive) I loved that dude. He was such a nice guy, and (expletive) hilarious,” tweeted Joe Rogan.
